| Description Fully roofed and one of the best preserved, complete medieval castles in England. A major stronghold of the powerful Clifford Lords, it withstood a three years' siege during the Civil War; and became the last Royalist stronghold in the north, later restored by Lady Anne Clifford who planted the Yew Tree in the charming Tudor Conduit Court in 1659. Climb to the top of the Watchtower; descend to the dungeon where prisoners were kept whilst awaiting trial at York Assizes. Explore the C13th Chapel of St John the Evangelist with peaceful views over the woods and surrounding countryside. Above the imposing Gatehouse with its four strong towers, the motto of the Cliffords is still strong and clear - Desormais - Henceforth. |
